Brendan, Belconnen
โI think the biggest thing with cutting out alcohol was knowing people can see me flourish, feeling good, lighter, more buoyant, healthierโ.
40 year-oldย Brendan has lived in Canberra most of his life. He loves the home he shares with his family in Belconnen, valuing the space, freedom and nature of Ngunnawal Country. Heย makes the most of it on his mountain bike.
Alcohol was prominent in Brendanโs adult life until it caught up with him after he suffered an injury.
โI couldnโt work, I couldnโt ride my bike, I couldnโt do the things I love“.

Brendan says that at that time his alcohol use had increased significantly. Eventually, he took a step back and questioned his drinking habits.
โThat was a solid fifteen years of choosing the drink over, say, being physically active, being healthy, doing better for you or your family or your community. So it definitely caught upโ.
Brendan felt he needed healing โ he wanted his โtomorrowsโ back. He put time he felt he had been wasting by drinking into something he loved โ cycling.
โI didnโt put a timeframe on it โ I didnโt put pressure โ I just knew it needed to happenโ”
โA thought will come in โ youโll have that thought and youโll say, OK, not now. Iโm good for now. Iโm good for nowโ.

Brendanโs now been alcohol-free for more than a year. He found that without alcohol he could still socialise, still have meaningful interactions with friends and be more present with his family.
โNone of that changed โ I didnโt lose any friendsโ.
โI love my mates whether weโre having a coffee or youโre riding a bike or youโre having a beer โฆ. but I just choose not to take that beerโ.
โThe change with cutting out alcohol โ especially parenting, itโs night and day. Iโm a lot more calm, a lot more patient, a lot more present, and itโs just, itโs nothing but the world of good”.
