40 year-oldย Brendan has lived in Canberra most of his life. He loves the home he shares with his family in Belconnen, valuing the space, freedom and nature of Ngunnawal Country. Heย makes the most of it on his mountain bike.

Alcohol was prominent in Brendanโ€™s adult life until it caught up with him after he suffered an injury.

โ€œI couldnโ€™t work, I couldnโ€™t ride my bike, I couldnโ€™t do the things I love“.

Brendan says that at that time his alcohol use had increased significantly. Eventually, he took a step back and questioned his drinking habits.

โ€œThat was a solid fifteen years of choosing the drink over, say, being physically active, being healthy, doing better for you or your family or your community. So it definitely caught upโ€.

Brendan felt he needed healing โ€“ he wanted his โ€˜tomorrowsโ€™ back. He put time he felt he had been wasting by drinking into something he loved โ€“ cycling.

โ€œI didnโ€™t put a timeframe on it โ€“ I didnโ€™t put pressure โ€“ I just knew it needed to happenโ€™”

โ€œA thought will come in โ€“ youโ€™ll have that thought and youโ€™ll say, OK, not now. Iโ€™m good for now. Iโ€™m good for nowโ€.

Brendanโ€™s now been alcohol-free for more than a year. He found that without alcohol he could still socialise, still have meaningful interactions with friends and be more present with his family.

 โ€œNone of that changed โ€“ I didnโ€™t lose any friendsโ€.

โ€œI love my mates whether weโ€™re having a coffee or youโ€™re riding a bike or youโ€™re having a beer โ€ฆ. but I just choose not to take that beerโ€.

โ€œThe change with cutting out alcohol โ€“ especially parenting, itโ€™s night and day. Iโ€™m a lot more calm, a lot more patient, a lot more present, and itโ€™s just, itโ€™s nothing but the world of good”.
